Henry's Dress

Henry's Dress released only one full length album in their brief tenure during the mid 90's. They're from the Mission (back when the Mission was still Junktown, USA) and in 1996 they released "Bust 'em Green" on Slumberland, a cocophonous assault of jangly twee, mid-90's pop-punk, and angry, angry noise. What is perhaps most surprising about this band is that no one knows who they are. What gives? This is great! A must listen for fan's of the current twee revival that is happening everywhere these days (Vivian Girls, Grass Widow, Cause co-Motion, etc . . .) For proof, you can find the album HERE.

Johnny Depp again?

I found a made-for-TV movie from 1986 called Slow Burn at the Thrift Center yesterday and, lo and behold, Johnny Depp is in it. I guess the reason I am telling you this is because, while the rest of the movie sucked, Johnny Depp looked fucking awesome for the three or so minutes he was on screen, as did his character's girlfriend. What a pair of hotties.

'Cross the Pond

Great new wave from England circa 1980. This 7" captures everything that is good about new wave and shrugs off most of the rest (minus some goofy bass work). You can find it HERE.

Have a Nice Life - "Deathconsciousness"

The more I listen to this album, the more I want to listen to this album. "Deathconsciousness" is the debut release from Have a Nice Life, a two piece from Connecticut, and, to put it simply, it is about as close to perfect as a collection of songs can get. Somewhere between the Chameleons, New Order and Burzum (imagine an evil version of No Age) lurks a bleak moonscape that draws you in only to smother you beneath a leaden shadow of noise. It's far too vast to pull its whole body into view, so instead you just kinda' surrender to how fucking awesomely huge this thing is that's lumbering towards you. Sit back and watch it grow from a tiny dot on the horizon to a dark mass of fuzz looming over you.

Pangea - Golden Arches

Pangea is an amazing band from Southern California that features members of God Equals Genocide (another great band). Although their first album, from which this song is taken, is more on the folk-punky side, Pangea immediately stands out from the crowded septic tank of rat-tails and bike tubing that litters college campuses, proving once again to my otherwise bigoted ears that hidden in every tangential niche of hipster friendly drivel are moments of sheer brilliance. (Actually, I quite enjoy folk-punk, but there is a lot of brainless cutesy wimp crap to wade through) Warning! Once you listen to this song, it will embed itself in dark corners of your mind from whence it may never be pried.



If you like what you hear, you may be happy to know that Pangea is still recording and has, like a beautiful butterfly, shed its folk-punk cocoon in favor of a more radiant pop wingspan. Fuck Lemmy, Lisa Nash is God.

Who is Lisa Nash? Superficially, she appears to be the most heart-meltingly attractive goth chick ever. Upon closer inspection . . . well, that part holds up pretty well, but there's so much more to love about Lisa Nash than just her awesome hair and bite sized stature! The picture above is taken from the insert of the Screaming Sneakers "Marching Orders" EP, the only record the Sneakers, the early Florida punk band for which Ms. Nash sang, ever released, and, guess what, IT KICKS ASS! The first track on the four track EP is one of the best (if not the best?) pop-punk songs ever. If you doubt the foundations of my enthusiasm, you can find it HERE. Also,



Yeah, that's Lisa Nash and JOHNNY FUCKING DEPP . . . just hangin' out. Probably contemplating the beautiful and talented children they were gonna have together, until something must have gone terribly, terribly wrong because there is NO reason that these two people would meet and not reproduce. Plus, although you can't really see it in this picture, she has a metal-ass tattoo of herself on her left arm. How fucking punk is that?

Srsly. The album cover may dissuade you at first, but listen to the guitar solo on "That's You" by My Solid Ground. It will demolish you. Combine that with Uriah Heep, and all of a sudden your face is melting. Melting, motherfucker . . . off your skull.

This album fucking rules. Sure, the lyrics are kinda goofy, but it was 1992! George Bush puked on the Japanese prime minister, Kurt Cobain married Courtney Love, I cried because I couldn't find my pair of cowboy boots and, goddamnit, what else was I gonna wear for free dress? It was a strange time for everyone, but few who experienced the early 90's were able to channel their angst into pop music quite as awesomely as these guys. A more straight-ahead version of the Smiths? You listen, you decide.
